In order to upload Letter grades to Moodle assignment submissions, you must first ensure that the Moodle assignment is setup to have Grade Type set to Scale - Letter Grades in the settings.

Note: Moodle Scales do not have numerical values associated, so cannot be used towards totals in gradebook.
Once you are happy with your assignment setup, ensure you have Offline Grading enabled. From there please follow guidance from our knowledge base article Download the Grading Worksheet on how to download the grading worksheet to work from offline. 

The grading worksheet for the assignment will download to your device, in your downloads folder.
Once downloaded:

  1. Open a downloaded submission to review it.
  2. Open the .csv file in a spreadsheet editor, e.g. MS Excel.
  3. For each student submission, input the appropriate Letter grade in the Grade column, take note of the Letter grades available from the Scale column. 
    Feedback should be input into Feedback comments column. All other data should be left as is. 
  4. Once you have all Letter grades and feedback input, save the .csv file.

    Note: Please ensure you take care when entering data into the spreadsheet. Letter grades are case sensitive and will not upload unless it matches what is available in the Scales column.  


  5. When you are ready to upload grades and summary feedback, click on the assignment name on the Moodle course homepage to access the summary page and click View/grade all submissions.
  6. From the Grading action drop-down menu choose Upload grading worksheet.Grading action dropdown, with upload grading worksheet outlined
  7. Click Choose a file and upload the grading worksheet from your device to Moodle.Upload panel for the offline grading worksheet
  8. Click Upload grading worksheet; a Confirmation box displays the students’ grades and feedback that will be imported –  check this carefully.
  9. If you are ready to proceed, click Confirm; a summary of updates displays.
  10. Click Continue.
