Advanced grading permits the evaluation of student submissions using structured methods of rubrics or marking guides. They provide transparent and consistent forms of grading. It creates clear assessment criteria, with criterion-based feedback to compliment.
  1. Toggle Edit mode on in the top right corner of the course page.

  2. Add a new assignment to the course page by selecting the + button or Add a new activity or resource. Select the Activities tab and select Assignment.Plus button
  3. You can also select the three ellipsis button beside the existing assignment and select Edit settings.Three ellipsis button selected with edit settings selected
  4. Select the Advanced Grading tab in the assignment menu.

  5. In the Change active grading method to dropdown select one of the following:

  • Marking Guide: This is a flexible grading format that permits criteria, scores and written feedback. It provides a structured feedback option with flexible scoring.
    The marking guide permits creation of a new grading form from scratch.

 You can also choose to grade using an existing template.

  • Rubric: This is a grid with fixed scoring levels with criteria and predefined performance levels.
    You can also choose to define new rubric from scratch or an existing template.
  • Ranged Rubric: Each defined level of the rubric has a range of marks instead of a fixed value, permitting grading flexibility.
    The same applies in the option to create a ranged rubric from scratch or deriving from an existing template.
  • Simple direct grading: This consists of basic grading with a single score and optional feedback. This is suitable for when quick grading is required and no structured criteria is needed.

Setting up a Grading Form


  1. Follow the steps in the beginning of this article to access Advanced Grading, select Marking Guide and the option to Define new grading form from scratch.
  2. Enter a name and description for the grading form. Provide a name and description for your Marking guide
  3. Scroll down and click into each section of the grading form to enter details. Creation of marking guide with an outline to input the criteria, description for students, description for markers and max marks for each criteria
  4. Click Save marking guide and make it ready.    Save and make marking guide ready to use in the assignment
