Microsoft OneDrive is a cloud-based service
which forms an integral part of the Microsoft 365 suite, available to all MIC staff
and students.
OneDrive primarily provides file storage in the cloud with a
synchronisation service connected to signed-in accounts on laptops, desktops or
mobile devices. This allows users to securely store files and data in the
cloud, offering convenient access to documents, photos, videos, and other files
from any device with internet connectivity.
Considering OneDrive’s key features, the service offers:
- Cloud StorageOneDrive provides users with online storage space where they can save, share, and access their files from various devices. This removes the need for physical storage devices like USB drives or external hard disks and reduces the risks that go with such devices.
- File SynchronisationOneDrive automatically synchronises (syncs) files and folders across multiple devices linked to the same Microsoft user account. This ensures that the most recent version of a file is accessible on all devices, promoting easy access and the possibility of collaboration with others.
- Offline AccessOneDrive enables users to access files even without an internet connection by designating specific files or folders for offline use. When reconnected, changes made offline are synchronised.
- Collaboration and SharingUsers can easily share files and folders with others, managing the viewing (view-only) or editing permissions provided. This can support collaboration documents and tasks several users can work on the same file simultaneously.
- Microsoft 365 IntegrationOneDrive is a central part of the Microsoft 365 suite, and is designed for work with well-known applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Changes made to files are automatically saved and updated in real-time.
- Security and PrivacyOneDrive has tested security measures to protect user data and employs encryption for data storage and transfer.
- Cross-Platform Compatibility/Device IndependenceOneDrive supports Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android and is designed to facilitate a consistent user experience across different devices.
- Versioning/Version HistoryOneDrive can keep track of changes made to files over time. This can be valuable as it allows users to return to a previous file version if needed, which is especially valuable as a protection against accidental deletions.
