In the summer of 2025 MIC will migrate Turnitin services from a Moodle Plugin to use the Turnitin Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3.
This migration is being scheduled now because support for the existing plugin is scheduled to end in 2026.
The migration is intended to bring improvements to security along with enhancements such as a more consistent environment with better reporting for instructors and students.
Changes the Migration will Bring
Among the changes are:
- An improved interface providing better insights into the status of submissions in the Assignment Inbox;
- A better Assignment creation process;
- The ability to copy configurations from previous Assignments;
- The facility to request submission deletions within the Assignment inbox, supported by a better workflow to complete such requests;
- Functionality allowing the Moodle Gradebook to be re-synchronised with Turnitin;
- The provision of Assignment analytics including a dashboard of Assignment statistics;
- An improved display of manipulation flags;
- Removal of the Multi-part Assignment functionality.
It is important to note that the migration will have implications for past submissions.
- Submissions to assignments prior to the migration will no longer be available within the updated Moodle Turnitin Assignment environment. To access these, it will be necessary to use the Turnitin Paper Look up tool provided as part of the migration.
Preparing for the Migration
LEAD advises that you can prepare for the migration to Turnitin LTI 1.3 by:
- Ensuring you have completed all grading work on Turnitin Assignment and recorded any grades in advance of 18 June 2025.
- Checking you have no open assignments on Turnitin, that is with a Due Date that extends past 18 June 2025. It is recommended that any such assignments be closed to submissions and that a new assignment is created when the migration has been completed.
- Reviewing any Rubrics that you may have created and by taking and storing a precautionary backup copy of these to a secure location. You will be able to restore from these backup copies at a later date if needed. For guidance with this, please see the article [[Backing-up, Exporting and Storing Turnitin Rubrics]].
