Note: All new Moodle course pages will be based on the MIC Moodle course page templates in line with the MIC Moodle Course Baseline. You will need to populate them with your own content.

Once you have accessed your course page, you will need to prepare the course for the new academic year. You should begin by completing the following list of tasks:

  1. On your course page below the banner image, click Settings :

    Settings tab highlighted

  2. This will open the Edit course settings page.

  3. The following course naming conventions have been applied:

    •
Course full name: [MODULE CODE] + [/YYSX] + [- Module Title].
Example: FR162/23S1 - Introduction to French Culture

    • Course short name: [MODULE CODE] + [/YYSX] + [Module Title(first letter abbreviation)/Module Owner(first letter abbreviation].
    Example: FR162/23S1 - ITFC/AM

  4. Check your course is located in the correct course category. If your course is not located in the correct category, email lead@mic.ul.ie to indicate which category the course should be located in.

Course page general settings - Course full name, Course short name, course category, course start and end date

  5. Change the Course visibility setting to Show when you are ready to make your course visible to students.
All courses in Moodle 2023-24 are initially hidden. You will need to make them visible before students can search for them. If you do not wish your course to be listed when students are searching for courses, leave the
    Course visibility setting to Hide

  6. Set the Course start date. This setting determines the start of the first week for a course displayed in weekly format. This date needs to be updated to ensure it appears under the In progress view on students’ dashboards.

  7. Set the Course end date. Keeping in mind that the date should be set to facilitate any repeats/resits that may be necessary.

  8. Leave the Course ID number field blank.

  9. Enter a Course summary. This may include a short module outline. The course summary is displayed in the list of courses and can help students to find the correct course to enrol on at the start of the semester.

  10. If you wish you can add some Course summary files, such as images. These are displayed in the list of courses together with the course summary when students are searching for courses.

  11. Changing the Course format allows you to change the formatting and appearance of your page layout. Click the dropdown arrow and select the changes you want to make. Each item has a question mark icon before it, click for more information on each option.

  12. In the Hidden sections dropdown select Hidden sections are shown in collapsed form

  13. In the Course layout dropdown select Show all sections on one page

  14. In the Force language dropdown select Do not force.

  15. In the Number of announcements dropdown select 5. This setting determines how many News forum posts will display on the Latest news block in your course.

  16. If you are not using Moodle to grade students, or if you wish to hide Moodle assessment activity grades from students, leave the Show Gradebook to students option to No

If you are using Moodle to grade students you should first configure the course Gradebook and ensure it is displaying grades as intended, before allowing students to view the Moodle Gradebook. Contact lead@mic.ul.ie if you wish to learn more about using the Moodle Gradebook.
  17. The Show activity reports option allows you to decide if you wish students to view a log of their activity and contributions to the Moodle course.

  18. The Maximum upload size setting determines the largest size of a single file that can be uploaded to the course.

  19. The Enable completion tracking option can be used to allow students to track their progress through the course using check boxes beside required activities, such as assignments. If this is your or your students’ first time to use Moodle, set this to No.

If you wish to learn more about completion tracking, email
lead@mic.ul.ie or visit this Moodle Docs page to learn more: https://docs.moodle.org/401/en/Activity_completion.

  20. The Groups settings only need to be changed if you are using groups in your Moodle course. If you would like to learn more about using groups in Moodle, email lead@mic.ul.ie
